An excerpt of Sparrow Girl

Enjoy an exclusive excerpt of a new musical, Sparrow Girl, written by Maimuna Memon and Chris Bush.

Sparrow Girl is a semi-autobiographical folk musical following four women across three generations, exploring the themes of religion, culture, mixed race culture, womanhood and choice.

Maimuna has recorded a performance of the title track for MACFEST.

Maimuna said of the song: "It has different meanings for each of the women, but the song itself originated from the fact that my mother always used to call me Sparrow Girl. She wanted me to spread my wings as she could not. She wanted me to have more opportunities than she did.  And for each of the women in this show, they all feel there is something more, something different calling them, encouraging them, asking them to jump in at the deep end and break the traditions of the generation before them. For women across the generations and the globe there have always been challenges, but they have unceasingly fought to overcome them."

Sparrow Girl is commissioned in partnership by the Bush Theatre, Octagon Theatre Bolton and Wildcard.
