Young company auditions announced for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Octagon Theatre Bolton is searching for young people to be a part of this year’s festive production held at The University of Bolton Stadium.

Octagon Theatre Bolton are looking to cast 20 young people between the ages of 9 - 16 to play roles including Glinda, Munchkins, Mice and Flikflaks in this year’s festive production, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Originally adapted for the stage by Elizabeth Newman and a team of writers Frank L Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will be directed by Associate Director Ben Occhipinti (Cinderella, A Christmas Carol, East Is East, Octagon Theatre Bolton) and presented with original music told by actor musicians and a company of young people.

We’re definitely not in Kansas anymore – it’s Bolton and the story of Dorothy and her faithful dog Toto who are lost in munchkin land with flying monkeys and wicked witches. Swapping her ruby slippers for red trainers and picking up new friends along the way Dorothy travels to the Emerald City with Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the cowardly Lion, in search of the Great Oz – a wonderful wizard from Wigan.

To apply to be in the young company, acting and singing experience is not essential, but there will be acting, singing and movement involved in the roles advertised. The production will run from Tue 4 – Mon 31 December 2018 and there will be two teams who will appear in the production on alternate days throughout the run and the roles will be unpaid.

The rehearsal period will begin on Sat 23 September and, for the first two weeks, rehearsals will take place on Saturday mornings. From mid-October, rehearsals will take place on Tuesdays 4-7pm, Thursdays 4-7pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm.

Two open audition workshops will be held at the University of Bolton Stadium on Tue 4 and Wed 5 September between 5pm and 7pm. The sessions will be led by Director Ben Occhipinti and Musical Director Rob Hiley.

Director Ben Occhipinti has said: “This is a wonderful chance for young people to be a part of our exciting festive production held at the University of Bolton Stadium. Our festive productions are always full of fun, laughter, music, and magic - it’s going to be fantastic to have a young company as part of our ensemble and to be sharing stories together!”
