Call-outs for 2017 REVEAL Festival and Top 5 Readings now open!

The Octagon Theatre Bolton is delighted to invite submissions for its annual REVEAL Festival and Top 5 Season, uncovering new performances, new stories, and new voices from the North.

The REVEAL Festival brings together a diverse mix artists and theatre companies to put on a wide-range of exciting and engaging performances, experiences and events, inside, outside and online at the Octagon. It provides an opportunity for audiences, theatre-makers, and artists to take risks together, creating and making new and inspiring theatre experiences in Bolton.

For REVEAL, the Octagon is seeking ideas that explore the boundaries of theatre, and which can take place to different spaces in Bolton, so if you have an idea for a show inside a cafe, shopping centre or even a car park this is the opportunity for you! We are also looking for work that can be shared online. we are looking for ideas that are progressive, accessible, engaging and reflect a wide variety of perspectives.

Associate Producer, Deborah Dickinson comments: “We are absolutely thrilled to be continuing the opportunity to uncover new talent from across the North with our Reveal Festival and Top 5 Season. The artists, performers and film-makers that were involved in our last Reveal and Top 5 events came up with some really innovative and energising new theatre-experiences, and this is a chance for new voices and stories to emerge. We are looking for people to get involved and create theatre that allows artists and audiences to take risks together!”

Submissions for REVEAL are now open! To be considered for the 2017 Reveal Festival, all artists have to do is to submit a video recorded on a mobile phone and up to one page of A4.  The submission deadline for REVEAL is 5pm on Fri 4 November, with interviews on Thu 10 November 2016.

Running with REVEAL is the Octagon’s Top 5 Season. The Octagon’s annual open window for scripts is also now open, in which the theatre guarantees to read every script sent in - and the five most exciting and diverse scripts submitted will receive a rehearsed reading inside the Studio as part of Top 5. 

Associate for New Writing, Janys Chambers comments “Every year at the Octagon we are so inundated with scripts that we simply can’t read them all!  So our two-month open window is an exciting opportunity for us to discover exciting new writing talent.”

Plays to be considered for Top 5 should be new, unperformed pieces with a minimum playing length of one hour. Just mark scripts “Top 5” and email them to The submission deadline for Top 5 is Wednesday 30 November 2016, at 5pm.

The Octagon Theatre wants to hear from new talent as well as experienced artists, and particularly from those whose voices are not often heard.




Reveal and Top 5 Season dates: Tue 28 February - Tue 18 March 2017.
