Follow the yellow brick road to the Macron this Christmas to see The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Octagon Theatre Bolton is delighted to take their festive production on the road this Christmas presenting The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the Premier Suite, Macron Stadium Tuesday 4 – Monday 31 December 2018.

We’re definitely not in Kansas anymore – it’s Bolton and the story of Dorothy and her faithful dog Toto who are lost in munchkin land with flying monkeys and wicked witches. Swapping her ruby slippers for red trainers and picking up new friends along the way Dorothy travels to the Emerald City with Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the cowardly Lion, in search of the Great Oz – a wonderful wizard from Wigan.

On announcing the show, Artistic Director Elizabeth Newman says: “We are looking forward to making the Macron Stadium our home this year bringing along our acclaimed production of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and we are particularly excited about being so close to our favourite local football team - the Bolton Wanderers.

It’s a colourful and joyous extravaganza filled with big hearted characters, dangerous adventures and unfailing friendship. Hosting our festive show at the Macron is an exciting chance for us to create something really new and wonderful that reaches out to wider audiences. We can’t wait to become part of the football family.”

Although it’s true that there’s no place like home, the Octagon are partnering up with the Bolton Wanderers, Macron Stadium and Whites Hotel to host their regular Christmas show whilst the town centre building undergoes a £9.87m redevelopment. The production is sponsored by Carrs Pasties who have chosen to support the Octagon to secure the future of the theatre in Bolton.

A magical tale of friendship and adventure with original music performed live, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will delight Bolton families this winter with dazzling landscapes and spellbinding music realised by the Octagon creative team lead by Associate director Ben Occhipinti.

Director Ben Occhipinti says: “Our festive production is always the chance to bring joy and wonder to people of all ages. From Grandparents right through to young people we hope to take as many people as possible along with us for an adventure down the yellow brick road.”

This Bolton version of the iconic story premiered at the Octagon in 2011, created by Elizabeth Newman and a team of local writers, the production achieved great box office and critical success so we are thrilled to see the return of Dorothy to Bolton in 2018.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz opens on Tue 4 December and runs until New Years Eve – see octagonbolton.co.uk/whats-on/theatre/the-wonderful-wizard-of-oz/ for more details.
