Local artists can apply for 1 of our 3 incubation residencies available in January 2021!
On what marks our 53rd Birthday we are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for local artists.
Since we first opened back in 1967, at its core the Octagon has continually worked to advocate local talent and provide opportunities to nurture creativity in the local and wider community.
Following a £12million redevelopment, we will be opening our doors in January to provide an opportunity for local artists to be among the first to use the Octagon’s brand new rehearsal room to develop new work – ahead of the building's public opening in early 2021.
We will provide 5-days free use of the rehearsal space in the brand-new building, along with a £500 bursary and bespoke support from the Octagon’s artistic team; allowing selected artists to develop a new idea or continue an existing project that has been stopped or paused over the last 12 months.
Octagon’s Artistic Director, Lotte Wakeham commented: “Earlier this year we held the Octagon’s first ever Freelancers’ Town Hall event for local artists and other freelancers. One message which came across very clearly was that there is an urgent need for freelancers to have more access to resources including space and financial support. Having listened to this feedback, we’ve created these brand new incubation residencies and bursaries, to give support to this incredibly vibrant and talented local artistic community.
“The Octagon has been closed for over 2 years, and our Artist Development team has changed since we were last able to work closely with artists in our own venue. Therefore, we’re really excited to start some new relationships, and touch base with artists who may have had a relationship with the Octagon in the past and are looking to re-establish contact. Personally, I’m thrilled to welcome local artists to be amongst the first to cross the threshold of the new Octagon building in early 2021, and I can’t wait to hear about their brilliant projects.”
There are 3 residencies available in January 2021 and applications are now open for interested parties to apply. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Wed 9 December 2020.
