Call Out for Boltonians to Showcase their Spoken Word Talents!

We are delighted to announce our first spoken word event in celebration of the world premiere production of Seagulls.

To celebrate new writing talent, the Octagon is hosting an evening of spoken word on Mon 4 November 6-7pm at Bolton Library and Museum. Produced in association with A Lovely Word who regularly run popular spoken word events at Liverpool Everyman. Hosted by Alex Ferguson the evening’s headline performer will be multi-award winning Irish spoken word poet Ciarán Hodgers. Alongside Ciarán, we are seeking submissions for poets to come and perform their own 3 minute pieces.

Alex Ferguson, who runs A Lovely Word at the Liverpool Everyman Theatre, one of the most popular poetry nights in the North West, says; “I am so pleased to be working on this exciting project with the Octagon, where we will be taking submissions for one of the oldest and most universal art forms, the poetic spoken word. I can’t wait to see what Bolton has to offer!”

Artistic Director of the Octagon Lotte Wakeham comments: “Here at the Octagon we are passionate about supporting and celebrating new writing. We are thrilled to be presenting this evening of new talent and I encourage any burgeoning poets and spoken word artists to submit their ideas and be part of this exciting evening.”

We are looking for poems on the topic of ‘coming of age’ in keeping with the world premiere production of new musical Seagulls by Beth Hyland. The show is loosely based on the themes of Chekhov’s classic, and interpretations as broad as possible are welcomed. Poems should be no longer than 3 minutes when performed aloud and you must be aged 14 and over to apply.

The deadline for submissions is Mon 14 October 2019. All applicants will hear whether they have been successful by Fri 18 October. All performers will receive a free ticket to see Seagulls at 7.30pm on Mon 4 November. For more information on how to apply, click here.

Tickets for the showcase event on Mon 4 November 6-7pm are free of charge but booking is recommended.
