Auditions for a dog and a young boy in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

We are searching for two young boys to play the role of Arthur and a dog to play the role of Sancho in our upcoming production of 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall'.

We are seeking a young company of two boys to play the role of Arthur, the son of Helen, and a dog for the role of Sancho in the brand new stage adaptation of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Deborah McAndrew.

The two boys must have the maximum playing age of 7 years old for the role. Only one boy will be needed per performance and the performances will be split equally between the two chosen boys. The chosen boys will be working alongside a dog on stage, so must be comfortable working with animals.

The dog we are seeking will be on stage often with a number of cast members as well as the young boy playing Arthur. The most important factor is that there is total commitment from the owner for the entire run of the show and that the dog has a calm and friendly disposition, with the capacity to be comfortable in the presence of audiences of up to 400 people.

Artistic Director, and director of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Elizabeth Newman commented: “In The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Sancho the dog is the loyal and loving companion of Gilbert Markham. The dog we are looking to cast as Sancho will be a working farm-dog."

This will be an exciting opportunity to work with a cast of professional actors and theatre-makers, including the Artistic Director of the Octagon, Elizabeth Newman, who recently directed a young company made up of 6 young people in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Based on the 1848 novel by Anne Bronte, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is set in nineteenth century Yorkshire, where a mysterious young widow Helen Graham and her son Arthur arrive at the desolate estate of Wildfell Hall. Isolating herself from the village, Helen soon becomes the subject of local speculation. Intrigued by this beautiful and enigmatic woman, a young farmer, Markham, gradually falls in love. Torn apart with her attraction to Markham and the secrets of her past, Helen finally reveals the shocking history she thought she’d left behind…

The performance dates are Thu 30 March – Sat 22 April 2017. The young boys and the dog who are chosen must also be available for rehearsals (please see below). The owner of the dog must also be able to commit to being with their dog for every performance and rehearsal.
