Welcome to our fourth and final ‘Get Creative Challenge’ of the summer festival! We loved the variety of entries from last week’s ‘Madness and Millinery Challenge’ and ‘Lobster Quadrille Challenge’ and hope you are excited about this week's final challenge.

The ‘Get Creative Challenge’ is part of our summer festival, four weeks of online activity programmed to help everyone stay engaged, inspired and connected during this period of physical distancing. The four weeks will culminate in a virtual tea party, inspired by Alice in Wonderland. This will be a live event with games and activities for individuals, friends, families and households to take part in. We’ll also be picking our prize draw winner live at the event. Each entry into the Creative Challenge gets you one entry into the prize draw to win an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the brand new Octagon Theatre once we have opened!

You can book your place for the Wonderland tea party here:

As ever, we’re giving you a choice of challenges (or you can do both if you like!)

In the very middle of the court was a table, with a large dish of tarts upon it: they looked so good, that it made Alice quite hungry to look at them—‘I wish they’d get the trial done,’ she thought, ‘and hand round the refreshments!’ But there seemed to be no chance of this, so she began looking at everything about her, to pass away the time.

Alice’s finale in Wonderland is a scene of glorious chaos, as the terrifying Queen of Hearts rampages about demanding to know who stole her tarts, and the King presides over a surreal trial to get to the bottom of it. Inspired by this scene of baked bewilderment, we’d like you to create a recipe for the world’s most weird and wonderful tart!

For instance:

Strawberry Slime Tart Supreme

200g concrete

Half a cup of snot

Mix together and bake at 400 C for 79 seconds precisely

100g soggy strawberries (the mouldier the better!)

50g scrapings of snail trails

One cup of eggland mush

Mix together and spread on base. Cool in fridge. Decorate with grit. Delicious!

Soon her eye fell on a little glass box that was lying under the table: she opened it, and found in it a very small cake, on which the words ‘EAT ME’ were beautifully marked in currants.

Inspired by the ‘Eat Me’ cake that Alice discovers (which make her grow and grow), for this final Creative Challenge, we’d like you to bake a cake so tantalizingly delicious that it just screams, ‘Eat Me’. It might be a restrained and elegant tea loaf, a multi-layered cream creation or full blown chocolate decadence.

If you get your baking days right, you can bring it along to the Mad Hatter’s (Virtual) Tea-Party and enter it in The Great Bolton Cake off!

Remember to share your challenges on social media (@octagontheatre) and use the hashtag #GetCreative, or email your ideas to participation@octagonbolton.co.uk. We can’t wait to see your ideas!
