Welcome to our third ‘Get Creative Challenge’ of our summer festival! Last week’s ‘Time of Day Challenge’ and ‘Strange Creatures Challenge’ brought out some great creativity. We enjoyed seeing all your entries!

The ‘Get Creative Challenge’ is part of our summer festival, four weeks of online activity programmed to help everyone stay engaged, inspired and connected during this period of physical distancing. The four weeks will culminate in a virtual tea party, inspired by Alice in Wonderland. This will be a live event with games and activities for individuals, friends, families and households to take part in. We’ll also be picking our prize draw winner live at the event. Each entry into the Creative Challenge gets you one entry into the prize draw to win an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the brand new Octagon theatre once we have opened!

The Challenge

Just like last week, we’re giving you two challenges to choose from (or you can do both if you like!)

Challenge One – Madness and Millinery

A Mad-Hatter’s Virtual Tea Party Experience (don’t forget to sign up!) just wouldn’t be the same without some mad millinery to swank about in, like the Hatter himself, pictured above in this fabulous John Tenniel illustration.

We’d like you to dust off your most fabulous, fantastical party hat and take a sneaky snap to showcase your headgear. Whether it’s a wide brimmed summer beauty perfect for peering out from under, a tasteful tiara, top hat or flapper girl feathers, or possibly something a little bit more streetwise and funky, all hats are welcome, especially home made ones! Get Creative with whatever you have to hand. Take a head and shoulders shot of yourself in full Mad Hatter mode.

For Instance:

Here’s our very own podcast co-host Alex, channeling his inner Hatter with this slightly daft selection!

Challenge Two - The Lobster Quadrille

‘Will you walk a little faster?’ said a whiting to a snail. ‘There’s a porpoise close behind us, and he’s treading on my tail. See how eagerly the lobsters and the turtles all advance! They are waiting on the shingle—will you come and join the dance?

Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you, will you join the dance? Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you, won’t you join the dance?

One of Alice’s many strange encounters in Wonderland takes place when she meets the Mock Turtle and the Gryphon (who we met in last week’s challenge). They introduce her to a fantastical dance known as ‘The Lobster Quadrille’. This unusual dance involves taking a ‘lobster partner’, ‘advancing twice’, ‘changing lobsters’ and ‘throwing a somersault into the sea’.

We’d like you to share the song that you just can’t say ‘no’ to dancing to, that makes you pull some equally crazy dance floor moves. Share your favourite track or video and we’ll add it to the playlist for the tea party!

Remember to share your challenges on social media (@octagontheatre) and use the hashtag #GetCreative, or email your ideas to participation@octagonbolton.co.uk. We can’t wait to see your ideas!
