Summer is almost here and the Octagon has a treat in store for any young people, aged 8-18, who want to stay creative this summer, meet new people (virtually!) and flex their performing muscles.
We’re getting ready for Wonderland: A Virtual Adventure. Wonderland is an Octagon summer school for 2020 with a difference! To keep everyone as safe as possible the experience will take place online, through a combination of Zoom rehearsals and offline, independent activities.
We’ll be taking the concept of Wonderland and applying it in a creative way to offer young people a chance to take part in a unique theatre making opportunity. It may be the first and only time we offer this experience and we’d love to share it with you!
So many questions! Firstly …how will it work?!
The Summer School will take place over 3 days from the Wed 5 to the Fri 7 August 2020, with a short sharing on Fri 7 August at 6pm for family and friends to log in and watch.
We’ll use an online platform called Zoom, which is free to download and really easy to use. We’ll spend some of the day as a whole company using Zoom, and parts of the day in smaller groups. We’ll also be setting you fun creative tasks to do independently, offline, in the comfort of your own home.
Sounds great! Do I have to have any previous acting experience?
Not at all! Our virtual summer school is open for anyone from accomplished performers to complete beginners. All we expect is that you give things a try.
Will I need to provide any props or costume?
We won’t expect anyone to have a particular prop or costume at home with them, or to get anything specially. We might ask you to think creatively (with the permission of parents/carers at home) about things you might have about the house that could be used to signify characters or moments in the story.
Imogen has been raiding the Octagon store for costume inspiration! Have you got anything like this in your wardrobe?!
How will a virtual summer school be different from a typical summer school?
The main difference will be that we won’t all be in the same room together! But using Zoom we’ll be able to share, communicate and collaborate, just like we would face to face.
We’ll also be relying on the (not always 100% reliable) internet to stay connected. It is definitely worth downloading Zoom and having a practice on it before the summer school starts. You might find that some areas in your house have better Wifi that others, you should experiment with that too before the sessions begin.
There will be some tasks which you’ll do independently, but we want the process to feel as interactive and inclusive as possible, so we’ll always make sure you’ll have time to express your ideas and discuss them with others.
Just as with our summer schools in the past, the emphasis will be on having fun, sharing stories and ideas, and making memories!
