In July, our theatre summer school offered a fantastic opportunity for the young people of Bolton to get creative!
Based at Bolton University's Farnworth Campus, the Grimm Tales Summer School ran full time, for two weeks during the holidays. We gave 40 young people aged 8 - 18 (and up to 25 for those with additional needs) the opportunity to explore, write and perform two tales from the original Brothers Grimm collection - Snow White and The Twelve Brothers. Each story was adapted with an upbeat and contemporary twist that included seven, sassy sistas and several princes wheeling their shopping trollies round the supermarket aisles.
As part of the experience, the young people worked with an expert puppeteer, and the shows were professionally directed and produced by the Octagon's Creative Engagement and Stage Management teams. Bursary places also enabled young people from low income families to take part.
The final shows were performed twice to packed audiences of friends, family and senior Octagon staff in the Queen's Road campus' main theatre.
Roddy Gauld (Chief Executive, Octagon Theatre Bolton) said: "We are delighted to offer such a high quality, creative experience for young people in Bolton. The final shows were fantastic, twisted and bang up to date!"
