Check out these first look pictures inside the brand new reimagined Octagon ahead of our opening later this year.
We are thrilled to give you a first look inside our impressive new building following a two-year, £12million redevelopment.
Reimagined Octagon Exterior
The reimagined Octagon has seen the complete modernisation of the entire building with updated performance spaces, brand-new participation facilities, improved front-of-house experience and expanded backstage facilities.
Our brand new bright and welcoming box office area, where our friendly team will be happy to help you.
The theatre has retained the intimacy and flexibility that our audiences have known and loved for over 50 years. We’ve upgraded the seating in the main auditorium with brand new seats specially designed for maximum comfort.
Pictured here in our ‘in the round’ configuration, but we can still change the shape of the stage depending on the production, including: ‘thrust’ configuration, ‘end on’ configuration, as well as a new configuration with this redevelopment: 'traverse' - which is where 2 banks of audience face each other with the action happening in the middle, on stage between them.
We have a new state of the art air handling system – bringing in fresh air from outside with much improved temperature control and we’ve also added hand rails, to make it easier to get to your seats.
Our brand new studio theatre space: Studio 1 is a flexible space that can hold up to 100 audience members.
Studio 1 will be host to comedy nights, live music, spoken word and small touring shows.
It can also be cleared of chairs for workshops and classes and will be home to much of the work with our young people and community groups.
Studio 2 is our brand new rehearsal space.
We make most of the shows you see on our stage right here in Bolton, with the production rehearsals taking place right here in our own building.
The new rehearsal room is much larger, lighter and brighter than in the old building and now has enough room to fully mark out the footprint of all the different stage configurations which wasn't possible in the old building.
Our new building has four dressing rooms for actors to get ready - this is where they put on their costumes and make up before going on stage to perform.
Kitchen & Bar
The reimagined Octagon is complete with a stylish two-floor Kitchen & Bar which will be open daily serving quality food and drink.
The Crescent Room, named after the beautiful view over Bolton's majestic Le Mans Crescent, is a brand new private hire event space that can be hired for parties, meetings, conferences or used for small performances such as live music and spoken word.
The flexible space, fitted with a partition wall, can either be closed to create an intimate private space, or opened to include the whole floor - complete with its own bar.
Changing Places Toilet
The Octagon is now one of only a small number of public buildings in Bolton to be equipped with a Changing Places toilet.
Most standard accessible toilets do not meet the needs of all people who have a disability. People with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well as people with other physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis often need extra equipment and space. These needs are met by Changing Places toilets.
We are now working hard adding the finishing touches to the building ahead of our reopening later this year, which we will be announcing in the coming weeks following the recent announcement of the Government roadmap for when theatres can reopen their doors.
We cannot wait to welcome you back to the Octagon very soon!
