Su Newell, Deputy Wardrobe Supervisor takes us step by step through the process of creating a costume.
Step one: design your costume; making sure historical detail is correct.
Step two: take the measurements of the person you are making the costume for. Once you have taken the measurements you can work out how much fabric you need.
Step three: draft the pattern - based on the design and the measurements provided
Step four: pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out. If the fabric is expensive or the pattern complicated, make a toile first.
Step five: underpinnings are necessary to achieve the correct fit.
