Our Creative Enagement Manager Imogen, talks about how we have taken our Arts Award for 7- 11 year olds online.
With more time than ever at home, young people and their parents are looking for new ways to stay creative and engaged. A big part of the Octagon’s work involves bringing people together to get creative, and we’ve been trying out a new online Arts Award with some of our Stage 2 (aged 7-11) participants.
We’ve always offered Arts Awards, which are nationally recognised awards to help young people celebrate their creativity. Normally we’d deliver them in schools and in our Youth Theatre sessions, but with a little bit of tweaking, we realised we could still run the award, and support young people to achieve it at home!
At the Discover level, you find out about the arts around you and start to think about all the different ways of expressing ourselves that are encompassed in the arts. Singing songs, writing stories, performing in a play, designing a costume….lots of things that we can help you do at home!
We’re also aware that with schools closing, some children might be struggling to keep motivated. As part of their Arts Award, all young people who complete the process with Octagon get a special Arts Award Discover certificate in the post; the perfect way to celebrate their achievement.
We’ve come up with a simple booklet to take you through your Arts Award, and we’re supporting the process with some Zoom sessions where we facilitate fun activities to get you thinking about the arts, and where young people get to share their ideas with each other.
Our first group of discoverers are enjoying finding out about the arts in their homes and having fun along the way. And you can join them! Our next launch session is on the 18th May, with new launch dates being added.
