Former Octagon Artistic Director David Thacker discusses his time working with Vanessa Kirby

Our former Artistic Director David Thacker cast Vanessa Kirby in three productions during his 2009-2010 season at the Octagon.

Our former Artistic Director, David Thacker, first met Vanessa Kirby when he was auditioning actors for his debut season at the Octagon back in 2009.

He recalls what made her such a special talent and his delight for her Best Actress Oscar nomination:

"Vanessa had all that is necessary to become an exceptional stage and screen actress, in common with those rare extremely gifted actors who are equally brilliant in both media.

She loves being on a stage, she loves the relationship with an audience, she has the charisma that makes it impossible for us to take our eyes off her. She is intelligent, very responsive to language, witty, empathetic, and sincere. She wants to be involved in work that is artistically satisfying executed to the highest standards."

"We’ve remained good friends, and she still phones me if she needs advice – or, perhaps reassurance, because she doesn’t need advice from me. At the beginning of her film career she was understandably uncertain of the right approach to screen acting.

Whether she wins the Oscar is irrelevant. To be nominated is in itself a huge achievement. But the real achievement is that she makes the film work. She holds the screen from beginning to end. It is a beautifully restrained, generous, authentic, empathetic, courageous, deeply moving performance that will give joy to all of us who have been privileged to work with Vanessa."
