What does writing mean to Charlotte? How do her stories come to life?

Charlotte Josephine

Playwright of Blue

What inspires you?

I'm inspired by different things for different pieces. In general, I love hearing characters speak who don't usually get listened to, sneaking some poetry in between all that colloquial familiar comments on the world, and making an actress work really hard.

What is your favourite novel/play?

Oh it changes all the time. I recently saw Anatomy of a Suicide by Alice Birch at the Royal Court. I think that's a new favourite.

HOW DO YOU BEGIN A NEW PIECE OF WRITING?

It depends on the piece. Blue started with an image of a girl dressed in a swim suit, looking at the audience, standing in blue rain.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO WRITE ABOUT THE MOST?

I'm really interested in that gap between what a character wants and what they need. I'm passionate about female protagonists, creating opportunities for women to take up space and have a voice.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SNACK?

I drink quite a lot of tea, does that count? (Always, Charlotte!)
