Reading the scripts for Top 5 was a "genuine privilege"

Artistic Assistant Alex tells us a little bit more about the process of our Top 5 Season...

Hello everyone, my name’s Alex. I was appointed Artistic Assistant at the Octagon in December.

The first project I worked on here was reading some of the script submissions for the Top 5 Season. Top 5 is the Octagon’s annual script window, when anyone can submit a script  to be read by one of the team. There were over 800 entries this year. Of these, five were selected to be performed by professional actors for the festival.

Reading the scripts was a genuine privilege. It was fascinating to see the variety in where the plays were set (from Bolton to the moon, via New York!) and the range of issues explored. We are living in uncertain times and a lot of the plays reflected this. It feels like we need stories now more than ever.

When those of us who had been reading the scripts had finished, we met to discuss and debate the plays that we felt needed to be seen by audiences. This took a whole day, with lots of passionate arguments being put forward.

Eventually, the Top 5 Season was settled on.

The plays are distinct and diverse, but I feel each of them has a lot to say about what it means to live in the 21st century.

We cannot wait to share these stories with you. Please do come along to as many of the readings as you can. Each one will be followed by a post-show discussion.

On a final note, I’d like you to think about the story that you yourself have inside you that’s waiting to be told.

You never know, it might be your play that is being read this time next year!

The Top 5 Season takes place in our Studio on Wed 1, Thu 2, Mon 6, Wed 8 and Thu 9 March.
