Auditions to be held for the role of Mamillius in The Winter's Tale

This will this be an exciting opportunity for two boys to work with a large cast in a professional producing theatre, experiencing everything from costume fittings to technical rehearsals.

We are auditioning for the role of Mamillius in The Winter's Tale. Two boys will be selected for the role.


  • You must have the playing age of 5 to 7 years or younger
  • You must be at least 7 years old in order to be eligible to play this role

No further experience is required for this role.

The chosen actors will be on stage from the beginning of the play during Act One, with three lines on stage and a further few lines off-stage. The boys will also have to complete a painting on stage, so must be comfortable doing so. 

Those chosen to play the role of Mamillius must be available for all of the following rehearsals:

  • Tue 6 September, 5pm – 7pm
  • Thu 15 September, 4pm – 5pm
  • Thu 22 September, 4pm – 5pm
  • Thu 29 September, 4pm – 5pm
  • Thu 6 October, 4pm – 5pm
  • Thu 13 October, 2pm – 5pm
  • Sat 15 October 10am – 1.30pm.
  • Wed 19 October 9.45am – 1pm
  • Thu 20 October 6.30pm – 8.30pm
  • Fri 21 October 1pm – 3pm

As only one boy will be needed per performance, the number of performances will be split equally between the two chosen boys. The performance dates are Fri 21 October to Sat 5 November 2016.

An audition session will be held on Thu 1 September at 2.30pm at the Octagon Theatre, after which the final actors will be chosen. The session will be led by director David Thacker, and will consist of a friendly group workshop; no one is expected to prepare texts to perform.

Award-winning director, David Thacker has extensive experience of directing child actors on television and in the theatre. In the last few seasons at the Octagon, David has directed children in The Winslow Boy, Macbeth and, most recently, the award winning production of An Enemy of the People. The young people who have been involved have always found it a rewarding and fulfilling experience.
